Best Way To Stain Ipe Wood

best way to stain ipe wood

Ipe requires periodic application of a wood finish every so often. much more so than a normal wood such as cedar or pine. when reapplying a stain or finish to ipe you will need to prep the wood first by removing dirt, grime, mold, etc. failure to prep the ipe properly will result in a poor appearance of the stain and or premature coating fading.. Ipe is just too dense and oily to make a good substrate for film-forming finishes, and even has a hard time accepting penetrating oils. even so, a good penetrating oil with a high trans-oxide pigment content is our preferred ipe finish; we've had the best luck with penofin's marine oil. armstrong clark oil-based stains are also very good.. Keep the ipe surface free from dirt and grime. periodic sweeping and rinsing with water will keep the wood looking better longer. best to reapply the ipe stain before the wood turns gray. depending on the exposure to the sun, you will need to reapply every 9-18 months. if you have any ipe staining questions please ask below..
