Extending your kitchen cabinets to the ceiling is a great way to get that high-end-kitchen look without breaking the bank for all new cabinets. if you’ve been tossing the idea around, go for it! best. decision. ever. now, i’ve seen a lot of people extend cabinets to the ceiling with real wood.. I'll admit i was a little anxious on how i would extend our kitchen cabinets so i hesitated a bit. i thought it would be much more involved than it was. thankfully it went really quickly and was a fairly simple build. (this is a popular updated post from our last home!) for years i've been planning to build our cabinets up to the ceiling.. Most homes built in the last 50 years have kitchen cabinets that are 32 or 36 inches tall, installed so there is a gap of 1 to 2 feet between the tops of the cabinets and the ceiling. and there is good reason for this, as wall cabinets with these proportions are fairly accessible to most people standing on the floor or using a short stepladder..

I wanted to build these built ins as much as possible in my own shop, not on site. it’s just easier for me to do things like that with my schedule.. so i measured the space to know what i needed. when in doubt, build slightly smaller and cover any gaps with trim.. the space was about 54 ¼” at the largest part and about 53 ¾” at the. What you will need to build your own diy kitchen cabinets: ¾” birch purebond plywood (full sheets are best, but 2×8 sheets would work as well). ¾” hickory 2×4 purebond plywood panels. ¼” birch purebond plywood (full sheets are best, but 2×8, 2×4, or 4×4 sheets would work as well). circular saw.
